One of the great things about human hair wigs  is their versatility and the fact that you can style them as you like.

That means you can dye them, much like your own hair.

But the question is – how you can dye a human hair wig at home by yourself without damaging the wig.

If you’ve invested in a high-quality wig, you want to make sure it lasts the 1-3 years that you know it should. So, you need to know how to dye a wig at home and protect your investment.

Let’s look at how to do so, plus a little bonus on how to avoid dying altogether if you’re not comfortable with the process.

Step 1. Know Your Current Wig Color

Knowing the color of your current wig will help with the dying process. If your wig color is of a lighter shade, then it’s easier to dye it something darker. If it’s on the intensely darker side, you may need to bleach before you can dye if you’d like a very light shade.

Step 2: Gather Your Supplies

Here’s what you’ll need to dye your wig at home:

  • Dye brush
  • Dye
  • Bleach
  • Wide-tooth comb
  • Mixing bowl
  • Gloves
  • Wig head
  • Towel
  • Shampoo
  • Brush
  • Blow dryer

Step 3: Follow the Dyeing Process

The Prep Phase

  • Wash the wig.

Shampoo the wig before dyeing. This is especially important if you’ve used chemicals or styling products in the wig before. Don’t condition.

  • Dry wig.

You can choose to blow dry the wig. Or, if you plan ahead, leave the wig to dry naturally.

  • Brush out the air.

Once the wig is dried, place it on your wig head, secure with some T-pins and comb and brush to detangle and free it of knots.

The Dyeing Phase

Before you start, you’ll need to protect the lace from dyeing. You can put styling gel on the lace and leave it to dry (or blow-dry). Then seal the gel in place with freeze spray and dry. Alternatively, you can apply a thick layer of Vaseline to the lace to prevent any stains from the dye.

  1. Lay the clean, dry wig on a flat surface.
  2. Follow the package instructions to mix the dye in a bowl with the developer.
  3. Brush the dye into the hair with the dye brush being careful to avoid the knots by the scalp. (If you’re only doing highlights, you can do this process on a wig head).
  4. Leave the dye on the hair in keeping with the dye instructions.
  5. Rinse wig under warm water until it runs clear.
  6. Apply conditioner as per dye box instructions.
  7. Towel-dry the hair. Place on the wig head and allow to dry or go ahead and blow-dry.how to dye a wig

Once dry, you should see the new color coming through.

Pro tips:

Make sure to test the process on a small part of the hair that’s not easily seen before trying on the full wig.
